This is my mother’s house in Bellevue. Mom purchased this post World War II house in 1986 with ivy in the backyard and a very small front yard landscape. She decided in 2003 that she was ready for a make over of the backyard and in 2007 we planted a new front yard landscape for her. Mom loves soft texture plants, densely planted landscapes, and large plants at installation. We ripped out the ivy in the backyard, sprayed it with Round-Up, and then covered it in black plastic for three months to kill the ivy. We then planted narrow conifers for privacy, small maples, oakleaf hydrangea, and lots of fine textured shrubs for color and fragrance. Within two years, the plants had grown in beautifully.
Mom’s front yard was a bit more of a challenge (can’t say we missed ripping out more ivy!) because most fine textured shrubs don’t like full sun exposure. We removed the existing rhododendrons and pieris and planted Mexican orange, ornamental grasses, and a Fireglow maple to provide afternoon shade in her living room. She also wanted more front yard privacy, so we densely planted her lower retaining wall area.
